When I first came to Norway, I never expected to see bioluminescence, those self-lighting animals in the sea water, as I had always thought it could only be found in warm waters. On a clear, freezing night of October in 2018, I was walking along the beach of Skatvika on Senja island, when I saw some strange blue spots lighting up in the shallows. I went towards the water to confirm my suspicions. And it was there! Hundreds of bioluminescent mollusks were floating and shimmering as the gentle waves came crashing on the sand. At some point of the night, the aurora also decided to show up for a double natural show of extreme rarity! Both the sky AND the foreground was lighting up! I made a timeblend of all the bioluminescence in the span of 15 minutes.
The aurora borealis is a mesmerizing natural phenomenon that so many people long to see before they die. It is what started my astrophotography career and I have been chasing them for 8 years now. On some nights, the aurora is very faint, but sometimes it explodes in very intense, bright and colorful shows. My personal favorite experience is when viewing such shows next to a still body of flowing water. When there is no wind and the sky is dark enough, you get the perfect play of mirror on the water surface. You are alone watching in this ephemeral, ethereal world, with only the sounds of nocturnal animals in the distance. In this collection, I am listing some of my best aurora reflection work taken all over the world.
