Many people ignore the fact that the aurora can actually outshine the moonlight. Ordinarily, the moon is the brightest natural object in the sky and easy washes out the milky way and faint objects. During that early September night in 2019, I decided to take a walk around Storvatnet and there was nothing on the aurora forecast. Right after midnight, however, as the full moon was nice and bright in the sky, a faint auroral band appeared out of nowhere right in the middle of the sky. As I have always learned to take my camera whenever I go out at night, I quickly set it up by the water front. Sure enough, the aurora exploded in curtains of green and purples right in front of me. Once again, the water was extremely still and allowed the most powerful mirror.

The aurora borealis is a mesmerizing natural phenomenon that so many people long to see before they die. It is what started my astrophotography career and I have been chasing them for 8 years now. On some nights, the aurora is very faint, but sometimes it explodes in very intense, bright and colorful shows. My personal favorite experience is when viewing such shows next to a still body of flowing water. When there is no wind and the sky is dark enough, you get the perfect play of mirror on the water surface. You are alone watching in this ephemeral, ethereal world, with only the sounds of nocturnal animals in the distance. In this collection, I am listing some of my best aurora reflection work taken all over the world.
