Root Atlas is an ongoing project at Terreform ONE that encodes urban patterns within natural root geometries. The roots are digitally guided into the form of landscapes representing peaceful regrowth in the face of war and ecocide. In a time of mass extinction we must move for global peace. This project highlights the need for interdependence and international solidarity stemming from our common roots. This collection encodes different city grids into the tissues of living plants. The pairing of digital fabrication and organic growth combine to represent a growing peace process, rooted in biofuturism. Each mold topography is generated through the translation of maps of disputed territories into mesh surfaces through depth-color mapping utilizing grasshopper, forming a unique pattern. This topology can then be 3D printed by the purchaser to produce a mold that enables the guiding of plant roots. Plant roots weave cities across the earth together symbolizing unity. Each NFT consists of a .png file paired with access to an encrypted .stl file containing a triangular grass mold, as well as instructions for growth. These 30 unique .stl files can only be printed by the owner of the corresponding NFT. The energy used to store and transfer the collection will be offset through the planting of trees as a part of Terreform ONE’s living architecture research program.
