The photo of the Crescent Nebula was selected as an Astronomical picture Of the Day (APOD) by NASA, August 25, 2011. The NFT is an improved version of the original APOD winning image: new data makes image must deeper.
NGC 281 spans over 80 light-years and is about 9,500 light-years away in the constellation Cassiopeia. It includes the open cluster IC 1590 and several Bok globules (dark doo-dads at center of the bluish area). This composite image was made through narrow-band filters, but combines emission from the nebula's hydrogen, sulfur, and oxygen atoms in a visible spectrum palette.
NGC 281 is also known as the Pacman Nebula for its resemblance to the video game character from early 80's.
