Istanbul Ghetto Club is an anonymous avant-garde art collective that emerges from Berlin’s widely-recognized underground scene that is a global trendsetter.
Producing with sounds of the modular synthesizer and traditional Anatolian instruments while experimenting with performance and new media art on stage; Istanbul Ghetto Club embodies an interface between three fields of tension, East and West, the underground and the mainstream and lastly the traditional and the zeitgeist.
The digital universe that Istanbul Ghetto Club creates through this audiovisual artwork, offers a unique combination of the mainstream digital aesthetics of the 90s with a unique contemporary soundscape. In other words, this video sample combines 90s digital aesthetics with the synthesis between Turkish folk music with electronic music. Istanbul Ghetto Club's unique sound and visual scape offers, on the one hand, an ironical take on orientalism, and, on the other hand, a satirical critique of mainstream visual rhetoric of the 90s.
This work recalls the geopolitical circumstances of the 90s, i.e. Gulf War, and offers a visual collage that brings seemingly unrelated figures like, a political icon such as Saddam Huseyin, an anonymous figure like a cat, a whirling figure, referencing Dervishes, who revolve around their own axis as part of their Sufi belief system, and lastly, a digital arrow from the 90s computer system.
