Gary Cooper was one of Hollywood’s biggest male film stars, from the silent era of the 1920s through to the time of his death in 1961. One of the most iconic moments of his career was his participation in ‘Morocco’ (1930) when Marlene Dietrich appeared on stage for a musical number dressed as a man, in a tux and top hat, to boos and jeers from the audience at first. She then won the crowd over with her performance, as she proceeded to seduce both a woman, then a man, in the audience and play them off against each other - before finally settling on her romantic interest in the story, which was Cooper. It was probably the first time a major leading man, always in control in the narrative, had the tables turned on him and was made the objective subject of the female gaze.
