Hong Kong Media has encountered major challenges since 2020. “Headliner”, the program criticizing current affairs with Hong Kong-style humour, was suspended by Radio Television Hong Kong. Tsai Yu-ling, the director of Radio Television Hong Kong’s show “The Hong Kong Connection”, which offers critical analysis of current affairs, was arrested and sentenced due to “false statements”. Team members of “News Lancet”, which covered investigative news, were laid off by i-Cable China, and all members of China and Hong Kong news desks resigned. Apple Daily, known for its investigative news and popularity among Hong Kong people, was closed; its founder, Jimmy Lai, and the newspaper’s top executives were arrested. Every disappeared voice symbolized the loss of diversity in Hong Kong. The Erased
“The Erased” is the first series of NFT launched by Initium Media. We made collectible works based on a few selected news events that had a significant impact on many of us. These works captured the precious moments when emerging public events impacted individuals, as well as the reflections and analysis at the time. We hope to share these memories with you, to resist forgetting, resist being removed, and resist attempts to rewrite history.
“The Erased” includes the story of a migrant worker who lost his home overnight under Beijing’s evacuation of the so-called “low-end population”, the tens of thousands of Weibo messages after the death of “Whistleblower” Dr. Li Wenliang during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as a number of ill-fated Hong Kong media and news programs under a volatile political storm. Via these NFTs, we wish you could see our time and see the people in the mids.
