Uprooted: Beijing Evicts “Low-end Population”

A fire broke out at a low-budget apartment in Beijing’s Daxing district in November 2017. This incident sparked a wave of mass eviction of the so-called “low-end population” in the city. Many migrant workers lost their homes overnight. According to the National Bureau of Statistics of China, after the eradication, the long-term resident population of Beijing in 2018 decreased by nearly 200,000 compared with the previous year. This film features Mr. Nie, who came to Beijing from Jiangxi province to run a grocery store; he talked about his broken “Beijing Dream”. This video is dedicated to those who silently devoted themselves to Beijing. (Produced by Initium Media)

The Erased

“The Erased” is the first series of NFT launched by Initium Media. We made collectible works based on a few selected news events that had a significant impact on many of us. These works captured the precious moments when emerging public events impacted individuals, as well as the reflections and analysis at the time. We hope to share these memories with you, to resist forgetting, resist being removed, and resist attempts to rewrite history.

“The Erased” includes the story of a migrant worker who lost his home overnight under Beijing’s evacuation of the so-called “low-end population”, the tens of thousands of Weibo messages after the death of “Whistleblower” Dr. Li Wenliang during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as a number of ill-fated Hong Kong media and news programs under a volatile political storm. Via these NFTs, we wish you could see our time and see the people in the mids.
