Carmo Convent, Lisbon, Portugal.

In 1755, an earthquake followed by a no less destructive tsunami, fires, and marauders destroyed Lisbon. They rebuilt the city, but not the Carmo Convent, which they left as a reminder of the disaster.

My journey into the world of photography began in the early 1980s. Our school club had a well-equipped laboratory, photographic equipment, a library with authors from around the world, and most importantly a teacher who had dedicated his life to this art and managed to pass on his love and passion for photography and the whole creative process behind it. Our classes started with getting a camera, lenses, and a film, and after that, we went out on the streets of my hometown on our own. And it is a wonderful town, with old architecture and culture in the best European traditions. The next day we went back to the lab and the magic began. We showed the films, and then we chose the good shots and made copies in the darkroom. These were moments of sacramental silence imbued with the smell of photographic chemicals and press-heated photos. In those years, we began to feel an almost religious respect for the creative process, and for many of us, that attitude persisted.
