Lucky Charm 01

“Sweetheart,” An old gentleman had called out to me. He was sitting down on a chair with his arms crossed in front of him as he stared. Then, he motioned me to sit next to him with a pat of his hand. “Come sit next to me.”

“Yes, grandpa,” I spoke as I shuffled towards him. Even though I was fresh out of high school, going against my grandfather was out of the question. I could feel his piercing gaze that could read everything about me.

I took a seat, taking a moment for me to get comfortable.

“Look, here sprout,” he said with pep to his talk. He pulled out a small lucky charm worn and torn around the edges. It was a small trinket tied to a small gold coin he always had in his wallet. “This had saved me a lot in the war. Every time I had it with me, I got out of the skin of my teeth and made it here alive.”

I leaned over as he was flipping the coin. “Are you sure, grandpa? Wouldn’t it be that you believed that you would come out of there alive that made you be able to pull through?”

My grandfather went silent. He thought over what I had to say.

“Maybe, but there are forces in this world.”
