JAPE story
Kitwiti was given by a vendor from Oshné to their cousin at the Ministry of Agriculture who brought him to the sanctuary. He had been mutilated: some teeth torn out and fingers missing. He quickly gained confidence with a surrogate mother, and when I photographed him he was know as the sanctuary ambassador - walking around and welcoming visitors. When taking his portrait he pulled his mouth into what appeared to be a huge smile, but I got the feeling it meant back off!
James and Other Apes (#JAPES) presents 52 celebrated portraits of great apes, captured by James Mollison across four years and four continents. Shot in the aesthetic of the passport photograph, each Jape has their own unique traits and characteristics, and powerful stories which can be found at ART3.io/japes. 10% of net funds raised through NFT sales will be donated to the sanctuaries who rescued the apes and invited James in with his camera, and initial collectors will receive an archive quality certificated print with their Jape.
