Shanga had to be taken from her mother because she had no milk, to be cared for by a surrogate human mother who would look after her until she was able to be returned to Berlin zoo’s group of gorillas. She was the first ape I photographed for the project and after I took the photograph her surprisingly long arm shot out and tried to grab my camera.
