When Lulu was very small she was found by environment agents in poacher’s hut in an isolated northern village, sitting next to her mother’s decaying head. Very dehydrated and in bad health she recovered with help of surrogate mother at Project Protection des Gorilles and then Lulu was re-introduced into the wild, where she was the youngest member of Djeke’s group. After I had taken a polaroid of her, I showed it to her and she viewed it with intrigue studying her face.

Shot in the aesthetic of the passport photograph, each Jape has their own unique traits and characteristics, and powerful stories which can be found at ART3.io/japes. 10% of net funds raised through NFT sales will be donated to the sanctuaries who rescued the apes and invited James in with his camera, and initial collectors will receive an archive quality certificated print with their Jape.
