JAPE story

Helene was bought as a pet by an Italian, and reared like a human baby. While she was little she ate at the table with the family but as she got too big and strong she was eventually surrendered to Project Protection des Gorilles. Because of all her time with humans she had difficulty relating to the other gorillas in her group, and when I was with her she followed me around in the enclosure wanting to hang out, watching me. However she didn’t want her portrait taken and whenever I picked up my camera she would turn away, looking straight back at me when I put I back down. It turned into a game until I managed to snatch this photograph after hours of trying. She was reintroduced into the wild shortly after I left, and now many years later a mother to one of Djeke’s offspring.
