This painting entitled The Conspiracy of Claudius Civilis was made by Rembrandt in 1661 – 1662. This painting tells about the conspiracy of Gaius Julius Civilis against the Roman Empire. The Civilis in this painting leads a meeting with the elders of the Batavian tribe, a Germanic tribe that became the ancestor of the present-day Dutch. Civilis led the Batavia Revolt which took place in 69-70 AD, against the power of the Roman Empire in power in the Netherlands. This painting was originally made for Amsterdam City Hall, apparently Amsterdam City Hall did not pay for this work and then returned it to Rembrandt. Rembrandt then cut this painting into smaller sizes to make it easier to sell. In the 18th century this work was purchased by the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts, this work is on display at the Stockholm National Museum until now.
