Azaka Medeh: Voodoo God of the harvest

In classical times, Azaka Medeh was a very poorly known minor god, his image far less widespread even than his fellow Voodoo spirit Baron Samedi. This may make him seem a surprising choice for reawakening by the scientists of LJF90 Laboratories. However, given the ecologically ruined state of the planet, he was selected in the hope that he could assist in yet another green revolution to coax much-needed crops out of otherwise unsuitable land in the Americas.

Perhaps surprisingly, Azaka Medeh now represents a rare success story among the scientists’ god-awakening enterprises. He works closely with scientists in facilities across the Caribbean and the central regions of the American mainland. Together, they have engineered improved methods of agriculture requiring very little quality land, including hydroponic crops in constructed indoor environments, fertilizers and growth media fashioned from waste products, and so on. These efforts have paid dividends for nutritionally deprived communities, though the damage done to soil, water and ecosystems means that these successes amount to a drop in a very dry, poisoned bucket.

Azaka Medeh is kind-natured and popular with the humans he meets, uninterested in using his abilities for personal gain, as is the practice of most more powerful gods. Despite his scientific expertise, he is humble and down-to-earth, almost a clown, a gourmand. He enjoys walking in the hills and enjoying the fruits of his engineering more than sequestering himself in a laboratory or ivory tower. As a consequence, although he is worshiped on occasion, his cult is far smaller than those of most other gods, and most of his followers also follow other gods in the Americas or of the harvest or nature.
