Glimpsing Ether-Examining(RMX3)

Tokyo 2020.

A person stands in front of a large window on a high floor of a tall building with the city below. The interior silhouette represents the soul. The second silhouette represents the physical self. The larger silhouette represents radiating energy.

This piece is a digital collage of sorts. I deconstruct the image. I do not add colors or marks. I push the image to find out what is there. By making a myriad of adjustments, I uncover everything that exists. I then recombine the parts much like one does when they remix a track of music. Sometimes the remix is better than the original but the original is always the foundation.

This person is examining the world in front of them. Their slight lean indicates to me they are examining something or maybe everything. They are focused intently on something in this frozen moment. This piece and the entire collection is about the beauty that can be found by shifting focus, literally and figuratively. It is about seeing the world differently.

I enjoyed taking this photo and always feel a giddy sense of joy when I capture an image that is as profound as this one, both for its simple beauty and the beauty and universality that it symbolizes.

We are all connected to each other and to something else: the ether. We can experience a glimpse of the ethereal through music, meditation, prayer, and art. It does not matter where you are when you hear an amazing piece of music or view great art, you are glimpsing the ether—a deeper structure, the divine, the incorporeal soup we all exist within.

The experience of connection is difficult to describe in words. The ether is all around us always. I am in it when I am making art which means I am in two states, physical and nonphysical, at the same time. I am unaware of time. Space is relegated to my focus. Spacetime becomes blurry.

This collection of work is an exploration of that elusive yet tangible place. More specifically, beauty that can be found when you just shift things a bit. The ethereal is all around and by adjusting your focus you can get a glimpse of it. This body of work is a documentation of the ethereal glimpse for myself and for anyone who chooses to look for it.
