Tatang is an ermitanyo (hermit) from the Philippines. As the name implies, they are often depicted as an old man or woman who lives secluded and away from mainstream society. They live in caves or deep inside a forest. They are known to have mystical powers that could range between immortality and witchcraft. They often have vast knowledge about the supernatural.

Tatang is an ermitanyo who dwells in the Pinatubo forest. Mt. Pinatubo is known for its 1991 eruption after being inactive for thousands of years. It was years after the eruption, when people started moving back to the province where Pinatubo is that Tatang was first sighted, living alone in the now largely barren forest. He was planting trees. After his sighting, some elders claimed he has always lived in the Pinatubo forest. They all claim he was already alive and old when they were still young kids.

A few of them claim that Tatang is immortal. He used to be a servant to a witch, a powerful one. One day, Tatang learned that he wasn't just serving a witch, he was serving Lilit, the first wife of Adam who was banished to the land of nod. Tatang spent decades learning how to kill her. No one know what happened or if it is even true but it is interesting that Tatang has never left the Pinatubo forest, some say, even during its eruption. Some older people said that in the volcano is where Lilit is buried and its Tatang that's keeping her there. If he dies or leaves, Lilit will be able to set herself free. The last eruption, they said, is Lilit attempting to break free.
