Castle Hill, which is situated In the heart of North Canterbury, New Zealand, this Alpine region is one of my favourite places to photography the stars, as it is to many others. The formations of hundreds of weathered limestone tors that erupt from golden tussocky hills make for incredible subjects to photograph. A bortle 2 sky - on the edge of bortle 1, it doesn't get much better than this.
Named by Ngai Tahu Kura Tāwhiti (Maori tribe-our native people) or "treasure from afar" in reference to the kumara that was grown here, it's also an area of cultural and spiritual significance.
Just 30 Hours after this, it was a completely different place as snowstorm came through.
Sky was tracked with an ioptron skyguider pro on a Canon 5D MKIV and a 24mm f2.8 lens. 18x Vertical shots for the sky and 10x shots for the foreground, 28x shots total.
For as long as I can remember, I've had a big interest in space, it wasn't until I took my first photo of the Milky Way in 2016 that the interest turned into obsession. Looking at that first photo I took on the back of the camera, it was some what emotional, you could make out shapes, make out colour, see the detail of the galaxy Earth calls home with the realisation that there's no way we are alone in the universe.
Fast forward 5 years and that passion for space has only grown stronger, now it's a lifestyle, a time to get out among the mountains or a lake or anywhere there is a clear view of stars. It's a time to reflect, a time to stand in the dark, in the middle of nowhere and almost be one with universe as the beauty of the night sky engulfs you. That is Arcadia.
