The Brooklyn Bridge in New York City was opened for pedestrians and traffic in 1883. On the first day alone, almost 2,000 vehicles (horse-drawn, of course) and 150,000 pedestrians crossed the bridge. Today, it is still an important crossing and carries six lanes of traffic over the East River.
