A birch bark biting is a unique piece of Indigenous artwork created by biting a design into a single layer of birch bark. This traditional art form was once practiced all across Turtle Island, wherever birch trees are found. They were used originally as beadwork patterns, to tell stories, and to record ceremonies.

This piece is called Dragonfly Years. In Indigenous culture a dragonfly is seen as a creature of the water and of the wind. Symbolizing many things including self-awareness and maturity. It is said that if a dragonfly is in your path, whipping around, making its presence known to you that it is a sign and that you should reflect on the moment.

In this collection called Iskotew - Burnt Originals Half Moon Woman has burnt the original art piece and the video is released in unlockable content.

Half Moon Woman (Pat Bruderer) is a Cree Indigenous elder and cultural carrier the art form called Birch Bark Biting. A birch bark biting is made from biting an image, using only the teeth, into a thin, single layer of birch bark harvested from the birch tree. Then, by carefully folding the bark, the pattern imagined is pressed into the birch bark, using only the teeth. Historically, this art form was used to create beadwork patterns, to share stories and were used in ceremonies. In this collection called Iskotew - Burnt Originals Collection, Half Moon has created hi-resolution scans of the artwork and burnt the originals sending the ashes back to the Earth. “I’ve always looked for new ways to share my work to ensure that the art form is never forgotten. As a cultural carrier it’s very important me. That’s why I teach hundreds of kids per year in schools, teach my own family members, and work to distribute my art in a variety of ways."
