John Lennon, the singer and co-founder of the Beatles, was at the Cannes Film Festival in 1971 accompanied by his wife, Yoko Ono. They were showing a film they had both directed called "Apotheosis". John Lennon was a simple man - I could photograph him indoors, outdoors, with or without Yoko. I had an appointment with John Lennon and Yoko Ono on a beach in Cannes during the same period they presented "Apotheosis" at the festival. They were two aliens who the critics and the public despised. Still, John Lennon didn't care about other people's opinions - he owned his crazy personality. I got the appointment very easily as if it were obvious that a star should let himself be photographed by the paparazzi. On the doorstep of my meeting, Yoko let me into their suite at the Carlton and said, "Come in - John is waiting for you!". I headed to the bathroom where he was indeed waiting for me... sitting on the toilet. I was very embarrassed by the situation, especially since he suggested I should take pictures of him in that position. But I didn't dare. When I started my reportage, and I felt very quickly at ease with him. We spent a few days together; I accompanied the couple everywhere, even to a screening of a pornographic film in a cinema open 24 hours a day in Cannes. I was exhausted- I had fallen asleep several times during the projection, and John would wake me up as soon as the action got interesting. On the day of their departure, I accompanied them to the airport- they were leaving for Gibraltar to get married and had invited me to join them. I only had my camera with me, so I refused the proposal. They flew away with my regrets; regrets I still have.

John Lennon était un homme naturel, il se laissait prendre en photo en intérieur, en extérieur, avec ou sans Yoko. Je ne réalisais pas la chance que j'avais à l'époque. J'ai eu rendez-vous avec John Lennon et Yoko Ono sur une plage à Cannes, tandis qu'ils étaient venus présenter "Apotheosis" au Festival. Deux ovnis décriés par la critique et le public, mais John Lennon se préoccupait peu des opinions des autres, il assumait simplement sa personnalité déjantée. J'ai obtenu ce rendez-vous très facilement, comme s'il était évident qu'une star se laisse photographier par un paparazzi. Une fois sur le lieu du rendez-vous, Yoko m'a ouvert la porte de leur suite au Carlton et m'a dit "Entrez, John vous attend!". Je me suis dirigé vers la salle de bain où il m'attendait... trônant sur ses toilettes. J'étais très gêné par la situation, surtout qu'il me suggérait de le prendre en photo ainsi. Mais je n'ai pas osé. J'ai ensuite commencé mon reportage et je me suis senti très vite à l'aise avec lui. Nous avons passé quelques jours ensemble, je les accompagnais partout, même à une projection d'un film pornographique, dans un cinéma ouvert 24h/24, à Cannes. J'étais épuisé, je m'endormais devant la projection... et John me réveillait à grands coups de coude dès que l'action s'emballait sur le grand écran. Le jour de leur départ, je les ai accompagnés à l'aéroport, ils partaient à Gibraltar pour se marier, ils m'ont proposé de venir avec eux. Je n'avais que mon appareil sur moi, j'ai donc refusé la proposition. Il se sont envolés avec mes regrets, que j'ai trainés longtemps sur le tarmac de la vie.
