Meeting with Simone Veil and her husband in their villa in Sainte-Maxime. Simone Veil (1927-2017) was a French magistrate and stateswoman. Survivor of Auschwitz, she married Antoine Veil in 1946 and then, after studying law and political science, entered the judiciary as a senior civil servant. In 1974, she was appointed Minister of Health by President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, who charged her with passing the law decriminalizing the use of voluntary interruption of pregnancy (abortion), a law that would later be commonly referred to as the "Veil law." She is an icon in the fight against discrimination against women in France.
