“Body & The Beast” is a song I wrote to my partner in order to help process the events of the last few weeks: beginning with the court’s decision to overturn Roe v Wade.

Sometimes we can put these emotions into words, and sometimes the best thing we can do is to just be present with our loved ones, so that we feel (beyond language) that we aren’t alone.

As I finished the song, I realized that I wrote this for the world as well. To the people most directly affected by this change, my heart is with you. I am inspired by your courage and I am here alongside you.

She is winner of the documentary photography category for the 17th Julia Margaret Cameron Award for Women Photographers. On June 18th, she posted this personal story to her Instagram page:

“I had an abortion at the age of 14. It was PRE-Roe and I had to go to another state to have the procedure. The threat of Roe being overturned makes me recall that very frightening time of my life. While I do not remember everything, I do remember being on the operating table and the doctor saying to me just before the lights went out, ‘Shame on you.’

Without the abortion, life would not have granted me:

• the most amazing and loving husband and daughter
• the chance to go to college and graduate school
• a multi-Emmy award winning and fulfilling career
• the chance to truly give-back and do what I love most..take photos for non-profits and take to the streets to protest for what I believe in.

Today I give thanks to the people who are boldly taking this message to the streets: ‘Overturn Roe?? HELL NO!’”
