Ten seconds of dark silence, the void that precedes our birth into a world that immediately bombards us with incessant images and subliminal messages. A young man’s eyes burned as his brain is fed an overflowing mix of images that overlap to mask the authentic self. Underneath, we see a softer representation of the spirit that is the Truth behind the Ego, resisting Ego but never totally vanquishing it. The video, beginning at 15 seconds, adds 10 seconds each month until it reaches its full length at 1:35. Ego only exists because of time; our perception of ourselves and how we fit in the world, or want to fit in the world, is based on our past and our worries or desires for the future. Imagine if we could manage to stay completely rooted in the present - just existing and observing without any kind of attachment to past hurts or future wants, not even attaching an emotion to the Now. If we could stay in the Now, there would be no Ego.
Phases explores Diana Sinclair’s poignant relationship with time— the passage of it, the constant grief, and the end of life not equating to the end of time. “Where will I be if I’m not here?” is a question that often kept her up at night for hours which went on for years.
It was only as Diana matured and cultivated her life and mind with new experiences and thoughts, that she was able to let go of that near obsession. Now though, whenever she enters a quiet phase of life, she finds herself returning to those early questions and obsessions with grief, loss, and time. But at present, instead of being tormented about loss of life, she’s been troubled with feeling grief over the loss of unblemished memory of moments, eras, and phases of life.
Sinclair’s vision is to communicate the ever changing, personal, and complex idea of time and memories through the dynamic lens of digital art.
