'Shai-Hulud' is the mysical name given to the great worms of the desert which can grow to enormous lengths throughout their lifetimes. The Fremen people of the desert worship the sandworms as agents of God, and consider their actions a form of divine intervention. Through their natural cycle the sandworms create a resource known as the Spice Melange. The spice extends life. The spice expands consciousness.
