Visual description: A surfer rides a wave made of empty water bottles and plastic bags.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Artist’s statement: One of the technical challenges i encountered while creating this work was positioning the bottles, I ran physics simulations on 12,000 plastic bottles to get them into the shape of the wave, it took over 7 hours to process and I had to do it multiple times to get a result I was satisfied with. A not so fun fact, 12000 1.5L bottles of water is what the average person has consumed since the year 2000 if they only drink bottled beverages. In 2020 almost 1 million tons of plastic waste has been dumped in the oceans each month. By 2050, the world’s oceans will contain more plastic than fish if current trends continue. Plastic is such a robust and durable material and using it for a water bottle or food packing to be discarded after use is absolute overkill. As consumers there is little we can do, we all need to eat and drink, the lack of alternatives given in a convenient way prevents many of us from boycotting products. If businesses provided ecofriendly packaging, I have faith that consumers would choose the environmentally friendly option, and at a more extreme measure I believe single-use plastic should be banned altogether.

Information: This artwork is part of ‘Earth series’ a collection of artworks focusing on pollution, overconsumption and wastefulness. After production costs are recovered, the remaining profits will be donated to The Ocean Clean up, a charity aiming to remove 90% of the plastic from the world’s oceans. Proof of donation will be shown via twitter post following the sale.
