Aphrodite, Greek Goddess of love and beauty, could make anyone fall in love with her. A Gorgeous Water Goddess, she was said to have been created from the foam of the sea. However, just like everyone, she had areas of weaknesses too. She was vain, bad tempered, unfaithful and extremely prone to jealousy.
Aphrodite was generally good. She helped people fall in love. Often in stories, she's described as a vain, jealous, cruel goddess. But she was also a gentle, kind goddess. She had her moments but the good in her always triumphed.
What did ancient stoics think about love?
Both Marcus Aurelius and Seneca write lovingly of their wives. The great Stoics loved deeply and unashamedly, this is impossible to argue against.
However, they did so in their own unique way. In contrast to the romantic love that is common knowledge, the Stoics approached emotions, love included, from within a philosophical outlook.
While the Stoics loved, they also worried that this love might lead to things at odds with their philosophy. Stoic happiness (eudaimonia) is a life lived with apatheia, free from desire, pain, grief, or fear, without passion.
Epictetus reminds us that the person we love is a mortal like ourselves, and that there is an allotted time for love – as for everything.
"Your love, has been given to you for the present, not that it should not be taken from you, nor has it been given to you for all time, but as a fig is given to you or a bunch of grapes at the appointed season of the year. But if you wish for these things in winter, you are a fool."
These are undoubtedly hard pills to swallow. At the same time, we need to remember that moderation is an integral and indispensable part of Stoic virtue.
All this being said, equipped with this philosophical armor, stoics do in fact indulge in the battlefield of love.
