Title: "Junkyard", 2020 Original medium: acrylic on canvas

Be the collector to own the early copies of my digitized original artwork! (The earlier versions of an original artwork is usually more valuable.)

This is a 100% original artwork by me. It is one of my latest pieces and it is digitized from the physical work.

The backstory:

Many years back when I just got out of school, I was a computer salesman. Every other day, I would ride my motorcycle across the bridge that separates Penang island from the mainland.

That part of the mainland is where most of the factories are and it is the manufacturing zone in our country, Malaysia. Along the way, I had to weave my motorbike through the large lorries and trucks carrying goods.

One day, I stopped my bike by the road side to have a drink of coconut water. Right in front of me was a junkyard where cars and trucks died and went to heaven. There were many old cars stacked up on top of each other, some were cut into half, waiting for their parts to be salvaged, some were partly crushed from accidents.

Each of the cut-up cars had different colors and shapes and even though they were mostly banged-up, I thought the whole junkyard was a piece of art. In my mind, I had a beautiful composition of colors, shapes and sizes.

More than 20 years later, I still have a clear vision of that hot sunny day, under the tree and drinking my coconut water.

And then, I painted this rustic memory onto a canvas.

Locked-Down Collection, 2020 by Alvin Koay collection image

This is a serie of paintings that I did from the beginning of the COVID-19 lockdown beginning March 2020.

During this period, I have just shuttered by technology startup company which nearly bankrupted my family. It marked the end of the nightmare decade of trying to stay afloat, whilst bringing up my 3 toddlers.

I had just started another company and business has been good. For the first time since the birth of my first child, our family could finally afford proper meals in decent eateries and life has become a little better.

As you may also notice, the new works have also taken on their new style which has more definition, positive, contrasts and colorful.

I have also begun to love the styles of Picasso and more contemporary art legends like Warhol and Basquiat. You will see some of the strokes and compositions from them in my new stuffs.
