We went out to go skate at this DIY spot in a sketchy part of town. It was right across the street from a motel that had very few guests. I was intrigued by the blue accents all over the building so I walked over to shoot it. An empty Citgo sign that was next to the “Travelodge” sat on top, high in the air so motorists on the interstate could see. But not much to look at.
When I first started the Empty Signs project in 2018, I didn’t overthink it; there is an abundance of them where I live, so I decided to make a series. After I had finished, an additional meaning became more clear to me. I feel as if it shows viewers all of the places that once had names. Everything from fast food restaurants, sporting good stores, and hotels are all just forgotten. The signs are giant decaying monuments which shows the crumbling of capitalism in America.
