I spent two years on Hawai'i island and when I first arrived the lava was not flowing into the ocean but we could hike up to the hills where the lava was coming down. When we walked back down to the emergency evacuation road this is what the coastline looked like. It reminded me of HR Giger's art, who is also from Switzerland. After I left Hawai'i the volcano went on to destroy three structures that I had lived in, an entire bay with hundreds of houses and coral reef pools excellent for snorkeling. Now that is all gone covered under new land.
