The image organizes itself around a centralize figurative element, incorporating facets from Diego Velazquez’s Portrait of Mariana of Austria, such as the sweeping movements of her dress. The sharp bands of color are being informed by the patterns found on sun dresses in department stores. The white circular shapes are depictions of an electron micrograph of white blood cells. The red circular shapes are depictions of basal cell carcinoma skin cancer.
This painting is currently on view at the South Bend Museum of Art until September 2021.
