The German "Bewusstsein" means "consciousness" in English.

Simply by separating the word, and reading it in different ways, multiple levels of understanding are created.

The artwork BewusstSEIN is part of the collection "Black & White" by artist JS/PIX.

Behind the pseudonym JS/PIX is a sailor, artist, designer and photographer who studied nautical science and design in Bremen, Germany.

JS/PIX Collection 02 Black & White collection image

JS/PIX starts at zero in Bavaria, falls like Asterix into a barrel of stout that was always well filled in his father's brewery, and is baptized, nurtured, and further-wound with milk from the dairy from which his mother sprang.

As a boy he finds himself in a seminary. Some time passes with ORA and LABORA. Also the early confrontation with humanism asks him many questions about being and non-being ... so he sets out to explore the world.

As a sailor he gets to know, love and fall in love with countries and people. In Bremen he begins to study nautical science in order to be able to determine his location at any time.

The result: the location is changed. From the College of Nautical Science to the College of Design. When asked by the rector how to classify this change of course from nautics to design, JS/PIX answers: "Whoever can paint big ships can also paint small pictures!"
