The artwork itself refers, in many levels, to the archeologic accomplishments of Marija Gimbutas.

All of the proceeds from the sale will go to support Chicago’s Lithuanian Center. The pandemic has produced a tremendous loss of income, topped off with the need to replace the heating system for $250,000. The Lithuanian Center needs your support.

2021 is the 100-year anniversary of the birth of the noted Lithuanian archeologist Marija Gimbutas. She identified the geographic origin of the Indo Europeans as the steppes, north of the Black Sea, a theory that she called the “Kurgan Hypothesis”. Her greatest accomplishment was the delineation of the matrifocal nature of the original European culture. Based on her research, she coined the term “Mother Goddess” and published many books about this subject.

Her master’s and doctorate degrees were about iron age Lithuanian burial sites. In 1981, in Rochester, Minnesota, Quarry Hill Park, I created a 15-meter-wide installation in keeping with her research. I exhibited photographs of this installation in art exhibits, and eventually used one of these images as the background element in my four-meter-wide painting “Burial Rites / Symphony”. This is on permanent display in the Beverly Arts Center in Chicago.

A further modification of this piece “Burial Rites / Symphony / Memory”, also four meters wide, will soon be on display at the Marijampole Cultural Center in Marijampole, Lithuania, for the upcoming year.

Over the past month, I have further modified the digital image of this piece by including my own electroencephalogram recorded while thinking about Lithuanian origins. The tracing itself is colored by my “Chromodynamics” series of large-scale paintings, which address the question of where our memories are stored. The title of this 2021 piece is “Lithuanian Ancestry” and it being offered for sale as a NFT.

With the purchase of this NFT, I will provide a high-resolution digital version so the owner could print out one copy of any size. Please note that this printing is limited to only one copy. The owner may keep the NFT or sell it at a higher price.

I will retain the rights to any further printings and to the copyright.

For over 40 years I have been both a professional artist and a neurologist-neuroscientist. My art is neo-conceptual: a metaphorical investigation of thinking and consciousness. I have transformed the artist's studio into a neurobiology research lab, merging neuroscience with art.
I have been artistically exploring the origins of thinking, though and consciousness. Where does awareness come from? How is it that we are cognizant of ourselves and of those near us? What is it that makes us human?
