Efference copies are motor signals sent from the central nervous system to the body’s periphery, and there isn’t enough space here to go into all the science of it. But in short, try and tickle yourself. It doesn’t work, yet others tickling you does. This is believed to be because internally, the brain receives ‘advanced warning’ from your own acts through efference, but cannot from other people’s, even if you know it’s coming. The electrical waves running up and down the body, in either case, differ, yet shape our entire sensory experience.
