This piece is the first in the "Selfies of mine" collection. The genesis of the project came about when I was developing an assignment for my students in art class. Seeing them work on my assignment gave me inspiration to try it out for myself. What came about was this piece which is a self portrait of myself. It marks a very meaningful and emotional turning point for me as an artist in the sense that it is the first piece that I am selling. I found in this piece a kind of depth that made me want to explore and create with an unfiltered mind. It is the first of many, and for that I am thankful.
"Selfies of mine" is an exploratory journey of faces, experimenting with different techniques. I (Margrete Härter Christiansen) use the selfie format as a template to weave together my visual world with my emotions when portraying people. As both a teacher and an artist, I engage with many different people in different ways. The synergy of teaching and creating gives me unique perspectives on the development of a character. "Selfies of mine" is my way of pinning my experiences down to share a glimpse of the diversity of human kind.
