“Number 48” was painted in 1949 by Jackson Pollock at the height of his drip period. Unlike some of his other works, here Pollock experiments much more with more vibrant and explosive color. He also lets much more of the negative canvas space show through than some of his other works.
“Number 48” stands out to enthusiasts and collectors because it is so unique from his other works which feature a much more muted palette.

Pollock was a master of the “action painting” technique in which he used frenetic and chaotic movements to scatter paint across the entirety of the surface he was painting.
