The Oyster Perpetual Datejust, launched in 1945, was waterproof up to 50 meters deep with an Oyster case and is now waterproof up to 100 meters deep. It is an self-winding movement with a perpetual rotor and features the world's first 'Datejust' to display the date on the dial.

Before Datejust was released, there were watchs that had the ability to tell the date, but they used a separate needle to mark the date in addition to the hour hand and minute hand. Datejust increased readability by opening a window at the 3 o'clock location on the dial to display the date. Since 1956, the dial window has been marked with a convex lens called Cyclops (a one-eyed giant in Greek mythology), magnifying the date by 2.5 times, through which Rolex obtained a patent. The model contains very important symbolic elements in the history of the watch, including the innovative Cyclops lens, the Fluted bezel, and the Jubilee Breslet.

Datejust is the most historical icon of the watch and the most core model of Rolex.
