The Automated Digital Photo Collage (ADPC) is an algorithm for creating a time-lapse collage. The ADPC compares a sequence of photographs, pixel by pixel, for areas of change. Pixel areas that are detected as different are layered on top in the image. Layering areas of its own choosing, the ADPC creates a decidedly nonhuman view, which intrigues with its logic and strange algorithmic humor. The ADPC echoes our human struggle to remember in this moment in the inception of digital augmentation. The familiar gaps parallel our own fragmented perceptions.

The ADPC is written in the python programming language and was originally developed for an exhibition at the Hudson Guild gallery in 2013 where it ran on raspberry pi computers and standard webcams, generating low resolution, live, interactive collages of gallery visitors. There have been improvements in the program and the hardware it runs on over the past six years. The collages in this show have been generated using photographs captured on high-resolution digital cameras, including the Canon 5DS and Sony a7Riii. The collages have been generated through the Automated Digital Photo Collage program, now running on a MacBook Pro. The panoramic collages are created with multiple collages of photographs generated with the camera on a tripod rotating back and forth to specific positions.
