Water lilies are one of the most fascinating plants to me–they appear to be serenely floating, but are grounded by deep roots clutching the mud unseen. In a sense, this represents how we see others–focusing on the flower they present to the world while the invisible roots cling to the mud we all have in our minds.

I believe this piece to be one of the most important in my genesis collection because of the greater symbolism it holds. In South Florida, I happened upon it after a sunny morning spent learning more about binary code. Through the lens of my newfound knowledge, I saw the tiny lily pads as “0”s and the spaces between them as “1”s as though the lily pads were the code that wrote the majestic purple water lily itself.

Paired together with this unlockable Seed Poem, my photograph speaks of the bonds between the little (at times binary) decisions in everyday life that work in harmony to create the very person that we are and can become.
