Maya Angelo's words have always been powerful to me. My sister used to read her poetry as a child and I was always struck by the power of this woman's words. Her ability to speak into existence her power with poems like, Still I Rise, is incredible. The ability to write our thoughts in a way that can connect with the reader is special. I think that it's so important for all of us to read more. Because this is how we can gain these powerful perspectives of women like Maya Angelo.
Through her writing, I have connected deeper with love, with connection, with compassion. I hope that my writing can one day do just a fraction of what she was able to accomplish through her words.
The artwork was created on iPad Pro + Apple Pencil with Procreate.
For those of y'all who have been following my journey as an artist. This is my story continued.
Many people do not know I was adopted (By my father) when I was 5 years old. Because of this, I have so much respect for the people who step up to be stepfathers and stepmothers. Growing up not knowing my biological father left me wondering about my family history and my lineage. Asking the questions, "Who am I? Where did I come from? Where am I going? What do I want to do with my life?"
With the perspective of being mixed race, looking for mentors or guidance from one source didn't make sense. On top of my racial mixtures, I am also interested in a multitude of subjects & disciplines. From fashion, music, arts, sports, community, writing, content, business... the list is long.
I always looked for people from whom I could find guidance. Over the years I learned and stood on the shoulders of those that came before me.
These are people who, for one reason or another, I respect and admire.
