Nuna goes to the prison every morning with her small cart loaded up with oranges and her orange press. With every step she takes, you can hear the creaking of her bones. She says she is 90 but she’s really 157 years old. Rumour has it that she has a deal with La Diablita and when she kills a rat, she eats it raw, they also say she drinks Ayrampu. These are supposedly some of the secrets to her immortality.
Nuna is considered furniture in the prison and knows the place like the back of her hand. Her face is a map of wrinkles, she’s always smiling and blessing everyone.
If she doesn’t like someone, she puts a magical potion in their orange juice so they have to run to the toilet.
Concept by Violeta Ayala. Costume design by Maria Corvera. Illustrated in VR by Rilda Paco. Animation by Roly Elias.
The eccentric deity the Jaguaress greets you at the velvet curtain, the gateway between theatre and lived experience. She casts you as Inti, a young man who dreamed of being the Sun God, (son of Viracocha, the maker of time), but ended up in Prison.
Inside the world of Prison X, you relinquish control over reality, as you embody one of the characters in the Jaguaress’ story where you have to coexist with devils, saints, corrupt prison guards and even a western filmmaker. Prison X is a mythological journey inside the dreams and nightmares of the Neo-Andean underworld.
Prison X premiered at the Sundance Film Festival 2021 to critical acclaim and will premiere in Europe at Cannes XR.
