One of those beautiful days of Autumn. It was November and we were hearing that the pandemic situation had worsened in Germany, so we were entering a period of contact restrictions - which have gotten even worst by the time I write this description. A friend that lives on the other side of Berlin came to visit me and we went for a walk around my neighbourhood. I hadn’t been shooting much during the day, as I was trying to focus on night photography, but I’d decided to bring my camera with me.

Most of the time, we’d see people walking in pairs. It was the new normal for us, since the restrictions started. We walked towards the government district and, on the way, we passed under the train tracks. The composition was done: a triangle-like figure of light.

In that scene, I thought of my moments in isolation. and how it was taking a toll on me. I live by myself and it can get hard sometimes. We had a nice summer season, a relatively warm Autumn, so it made it a bit easier to cope. But the prospect of spending winter (an already depressive season) by myself for most part was definitely not exciting. And I felt that this moment captures that transition: from the light and bright, to the unknown, dark moments ahead. And it’s been dark, I can tell you that. As of March 2021, we’re still facing lockdowns and a prospect of curfews. My friend has moved to another country and I’ve been trying to focus on my art. But I try to keep the optimism and see this whole thing from a different perspective: instead of spending time thinking of how long it’s been, I focus on how, day by day, we’re getting closer to the end. And I can’t wait to see the light again.

Photographing on the streets is about creating on the go, embracing the unexpected. Moving forward, every new angle is a brand new story. It’s about adapting to change all the time, being it in the light, in the dark or in the middle of both. Just like life itself.
