This is the original proof sheet, made in my 111 Wall Street darkroom at the time. It was made by cutting the negatives, putting them in a clear plastic sleeve, and pressing the sleeve between photo paper and glass while exposing it to light from the enlarger.

One important thing to note about this proof sheet: it goes backwards! Not sure how that happened, perhaps how the film was hung or cut and stacked. It was all done by me, so I only have myself to blame. So read it left to right, from bottom to top for the correct sequence.

What I wrote for the single image listing that is frame #33A:

Of course the question that is always asked is ‘how did he do that?’ Simple answer is that I simply don’t know. Rock and roll acroyoga before its time I guess. I do recall that was one of the craziest thirty seconds in my entire shooting rock experience.Jaw dropping. I didn’t have a motor drive at the time and was shooting as fast as I could. He just kept jumping and writhing and down on his knees. Explosive.

Classics. A piece of work judged over time to be definitive. And what is it but a “Charles Peterson photo” that comes to mind when you think of the grunge scene, or maybe even the nineties altogether? These are my legacy photos, the icons, the perfect outcome of the vision I was trying to bring to the world, no matter how small the subject seemed to begin with. I was an art student, so I leaned into it with that critical eye, no matter how sloppy it all seemed at the time. I always aimed high, with technique, creation, and concept.

Eddie Vedder once said to me, upon looking at an image I took of him, where his head occupies only a small corner in a sea of black, “Oh, wow, I never thought of it like that…” Exactly! The best art is a blending of mystery and beauty, constantly drawing you back in. Lighting is the emotion, composition the primal, and moment the intellectual. My hope is that I’ve succeeded on all three levels with these photos I’m presenting to you. - Charles Peterson
