Here’s my tweet that expressed my own personal experience of being forced to be a white male avatar in the web version of Somnium Space in April 2021: https://twitter.com/stellabelle/status/1386712011158003720
After I wrote that tweet, M banned me from the Artvatars discord and sent me a message saying he never wanted anything to do with me again. Having signed an NDA earlier as I was an artist on his Artvatars project, I really didn’t have a clear understanding of my rights, even speech. I never mentioned this publicly. Btw, I never mentioned anything about my experience with Somnium on the Artvatars discord.
It was a very shocking experience and something that I never even considered would happen to me.
A lot of the male artists on the project outcasted me over this, but one became a supporter of me and my art. In a strange way, I am glad I found out who M was inside, like a selfish Scrooge, desiring to silence artists for speaking their true experience, thinking of his precious money before anything else.
At that time, Somnium Space didn’t have female avatars or skin color other than white available on its web version. So all the new people who attended parties there were forced to be white male avatars. They had avatar options in the downloaded version, but new people generally used the web version first, so that was the experience that most people had.
I spent an hour with a support mod trying to figure out how I could make my avatar female on the web version……they admitted it wasn’t possible. The mod also told me that there were lots of other women who had complained about this before me. I couldn’t believe it, tbh. The mod also instructed me to be polite, and to not publicly mention anything about this on social media. Well, you know how I deal with people telling me what I can and can’t do. LOL.
This was back in April 2021, and I heard that later on they added the ability to be female in Somnium web version. Some told me that I had something to do with speeding up this change. One thing is for sure, Cryptovoxels is superior to Somnium Space bc they figured out how to make a gender neutral avatar from day 1.
