On the 4th of June 2021, the Nigerian govt banned the use of twitter by Nigerians in Nigeria. In June of the previous year, the government had tried to pass a bill banning social media in Nigeria and that bill had been opposed by Nigerians on Twitter. For Nigerians, twitter is a space to be seen, to be heard and to speak against ills meted out on Nigerians by our own government. This piece depicting a canary in a cage explores that loss of freedom and what it now means for Nigerians to be without a voice.
