This piece was inspired by Indonesian folklore. Dewi Lanjar is an Indonesian goddess of the sea and remains prevalent in the culture and city of Pekalongan in Central Java. Her name "Lanjar" translates to divorced woman with no offspring.
A fascinating myth persists that if a child goes missing at the beach it is because the child was taken away by Dewi Lanjar. It is said that should the missing children ever return, they recall tales of having lived in a palatial space. She also often takes human form and likes to walk amongst the common people in busy marketplaces.
