Based on Portrait of a Lady with Yellow Shawl and Yellow Rose in her Hair by Canon from 1874

Today we look at historical portraits and no longer know the contexts in which they were created. This also sometimes prevents a critical view or interpretation.

From today's point of view, women were too often depicted only as decorative figures. They were allowed to look pretty, wear a lot of jewelry or even flowers, but beyond that they were not allowed to say anything. Their position was definitely below that of men and many old portraits show that. I caricature this by over-decorating women: here the lady disappears in the excessive flowers and the precious lace.

Hidden Portraits collection image

Ten years in the making, Hidden Portraits reinterprets historical paintings through a modern lens. Using only elements from the original work, contemporary artist Volker Hermes visually manipulates famous Old Masters portraits, exploring expression when the face is obscured.

By blocking the emotions expressed by the face, Hermes invites viewers to observe ancient codes of fashion as symbols of self-representation and social status.
